Visiting the magical Blue River of Costa Rica

We are only 9 km from the Tenorio Volcano National Park, in this park you will find the famous “Río Celeste” with natural blue mineral water that forms an incredible waterfall and a blue lagoon. The park also offers many other attractions.

From our hotel you can easily walk to many of the local rivers or coordinate many local tours like quads, horseback riding, Bijagua waterfalls, cocoa tour, hanging bridges, butterfly farms and nocturnal frogs zoo. We are one hour from the Caño Negro lake, the Palo Verde forest reserve and the Liberia International Airport.

The path to visit Rio Celeste

The principal path to visit Rio Celeste is around 2, 25 km in the deep entrails of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, and it has a medium difficulty that allows beginners to intermediate explorers to complete it.

The distances to the near attractions are the following:

Rio Celeste Waterfall (1,5 km from the principal entrance).
Tenorio Volcano Sight (550 meters from the waterfall).
Blue Lagoon (200 meters from the Tenorio Volcano Sight).
Boiling Water (50 meters from the Blue Lagoon).
Teñideros (350 meters from the Boiling water).

Where is Rio Celeste:

Río Celeste is located in the northwestern region of Costa Rica, limited by the Tenorio Volcano National Park and its name place Buena Vista River. This is a mountain river that gets united with the Agria ravine at a point popular denominated as Teñideros”.

This route is the most recommended from San José. First look for the road in the direction of Naranjo and Zarcero. The descent begins after Zarcero, until reaching the city of Quesada. When you reach the village of Katira de Guatuso, you must turn left onto a ballast road called La Florida. From this deviation to the entrance of Tenorio Volcano National Park there is a distance of 14 kilometers.

The Blue River Geochemical Phenomenon

The turquoise color in the river is originated by the presence of the colloidal silica known as well as Silica Hydrosol (A colloidal solution of high molecular hydration of silica in the water).

Main Attractions near Rio Celeste

All visitors will experience the different geological phenomena and geomorphologies looking at the river; There you can also find thermal water located on some banks, exhaling sulfur gases, the sedimentation of minerals, the leaching of the areas and many other interesting attractions surrounded by a lush cloud forest with lots of plant and animal species.

The most important reference point with almost 30 meters high (98.42 feet) and a maximum depth of 17 meters.
The trip begins in a flat sector of 450 meters and later rises to 800 meters linear level at the entrance of the waterfall, where a path of 150 meters with 253 stairs that will lead to the view of the waterfall. After going down 75 stairs, you can see the waterfall.

After taking some photos at the waterfall you can follow the Tenorio Volcano. The walking distance is around 550 meters ascent, 100 linear meters and area, then at 450 meters flat.
From this point it is possible to observe the Tenorio Volcano that is formed by 5 volcanic cones that are inactive but Tenorio 1, Tenorio 2, Montezuma and Carmela stand out in the area.

It is a small lagoon where a large colloidal silica accumulation generates a deep blue light, and on sunny days, it is possible to notice a turquoise color.
There it begins to descend by about 190 meters and from the lagoon the flat surface begins.

The 350 meters rise on a flat surface to the exact point where the river Vista Buena and the end Agria ravine and meet each other. To see this incredible event it is necessary to cross two suspension bridges.
The main attraction of all is the addition of colloidal silica at the bottom of the river, which allows the water to take on that particular light blue color. Normally, it resembles soap water.
